Does Activated Oxygen Kill the Coronavirus?

Using Activated Oxygen to Sterilize masks against corona virusAs the coronavirus continues to evolve and become more contagious, there have been many unanswered questions as there has been no proper clinical or scientific research conducted on it yet regarding its properties since Covid-19 only made its maiden debut in December 2019.

There are questions concerning how long a virus-like Covid-19 can survive outside a host.

The influenza virus can survive anything between 5 hours up to 7 days on an outside surface depending on the location temperature and humidity, in contrast, noroviruses that usually attack the gastrointestinal tract can survive up to four weeks on surfaces even in hot and dry conditions and can withstand most disinfectants.

Typically, most respiratory viruses like the coronavirus favor a cooler temperature.

There have been no researches done so far on the new coronavirus or even on the SARS virus, its ‘close cousin’ regarding how long it can survive outside on surfaces

It is wrong to assume that the coronavirus can only remain active for a few hours on the surface as suggested by one health organization through its online site, which is claiming it’s the chief source of information on the coronavirus when there is no scientific proof of that. Should anyone get infected due to conditions contrary to their advice, they should not hesitate to sue that organization in court for disseminating information that is not yet ascertained scientifically, thus causing harm.

Viruses usually are not living organisms per se. They are complex biomolecules that require a living cell to be active.

To be safe, as we still do not know how long this coronavirus can survive on surfaces, it’s best to disinfect areas with lots of contact with individuals whether or not they are showing signs of having been infected.

One right way to do that is by using ozone gas.

Ozone gas has been proven to kill the SARS coronavirus. Because the structure of Covid-19 is almost identical to that of the SARS coronavirus, it is relatively safe to say that it will also work on the new coronavirus. However, it must be noted that there are no studies to date except one that is currently ongoing in China at the Institute of Virology in Hubei with regards to this.

There are more than 17 scientific studies that show Ozone gas can destroy the SARS coronavirus. Ozone generators can make ozone from normal air and are normally used as room disinfectants.

The antipathogenic impacts of ozone have been substantiated for several decades now. Its killing action upon bacteria, viruses, fungi, and in many species of protozoa, serve as the basis for its increasing use in disinfecting municipal water supplies in cities worldwide.

Normally, viruses are small, independent particles, built of crystals and macromolecules. Unlike bacteria, they proliferate only within the host cell. Ozone destroys viruses by diffusing through the protein coat into the nucleic acid core, damaging the viral RNA. At higher concentrations, ozone destroys the capsid or exterior protein shell by oxidation.

Many families of viruses including poliovirus I and 2, human rotaviruses, Norwalk virus, Parvoviruses, and Hepatitis A, B, and non-A non-B are among many others that are susceptible to the virucidal actions of ozone.

Many research efforts on ozone’s virucidal effects have centered upon ozone’s propensity to break apart lipid molecules at sites of multiple bond configuration. Indeed, once the virus’s lipid envelope is fragmented, its DNA or RNA core cannot survive.

The enveloped viruses are typically more sensitive to physicochemical challenges than are naked virions. Though ozone’s impacts upon unsaturated lipids are one of its best-documented biochemical actions, ozone is known to interact with proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids.

The current coronavirus is an enveloped virus.

Coronavirus Mask DisinfectionThere are many forms of Ozone generators on the market from huge machines that cost a couple of thousand US Dollars to simple ones that can be purchased online from shoppe, lazada etc. for as low as Thai Baht 350. or about US$10. These are usually used to wash vegetables but can also be used to disinfect small rooms of sizes about 25 to 30 sqm.

Typically, ozone generators should only be used by experts as ozone is dangerous to humans. It can kill your cells lining your mouth, nasal pathways, and your lungs. It can cause cell mutations and cause cancer. And for those with other underlying diseases, brief exposure to it can be harmful.

When utilizing the small ozone generators for little room disinfection, ensure you have a timer and never be in the room when the device is on. The device should be operated with windows closed and no living thing in the room, including pets for about 10 to 15 minutes. (these small machines have a lower ozone volume output; thus, a longer time is preferred.) Do not go into the room for at least 3 hours, and upon entering, wear a mask and open all windows and air the place for about 15 minutes first prior to stepping back in.
